Breakfast
Programs
Breakfast
is the most important meal of the day. The demands of the classroom
and the learning process can be difficult for children who are hungry.
A proper breakfast provides the necessary nutrients to eliminate hunger
symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, sleepiness and restlessness. ARAMARK
offers various breakfast programseither in the cafeteria or in
the classroomto ensure that students can start the day off right
with a healthy breakfast.
Many schools
serve a full breakfast in the cafeteria. Students are able to arrive
early and eat a complete breakfast while catching up with friends or
studying. In-cafeteria breakfasts include favorites like Breakfast Pizza,
varieties of Breakfast Burritos, pancakes, cereal, and many grab-n-go
items.
A growing
number of our districts are taking advantage of the Breakfast in
the Classroom (BiC) program. Students can enjoy a healthy breakfast
with their classmates while teachers take attendance and cover other
homeroom activities. There are a wide array of items that can be served
including cereals, breakfast sandwiches, bagels, and more. BiC works
either by having our on-site ARAMARK staff deliver breakfast to each
classroom or by having students pick up breakfast at the school entrance
on their way to the classroom.
Several
studies indicate students who eat breakfast:
- Score
higher on tests and earn higher grades
- Have
better concentration in the classroom
- Have
better attendance and less tardiness
- Visit
the school nurse less frequently
- Have
fewer behavioral and emotional problems
Breakfast
programs offered by the school district really benefit those students
whose parents work, have long bus rides, or who would rather not eat
when they first wake up. Since breakfastwhether served in the
cafeteria or the classroomfalls under federal guidelines such
as the National School Lunch Program, districts can take advantage of
the additional reimbursements for increased participation in this daypart
while ensuring that their students are starting the day off right.
